Which has the best town?
Breckenridge, without much argument. It is a genuine Victorian mining town with a working Main Street, restaurants, bars and shops that existed long before the ski area.
Keystone and Copper both have purpose-built base villages instead. They function perfectly well, though neither gives you the feeling of a town you could enjoy without skis.
Which is best for families?
Keystone. It is built around family skiing, with extensive beginner terrain, strong ski school provision and night skiing that gives children a second session after a nap.
Copper also works well because of how its terrain is laid out. The mountain naturally separates beginner, intermediate and advanced runs into different areas, so groups of mixed ability split easily and meet at the base.

Which is least crowded?
Copper Mountain, consistently. It draws fewer day-trippers than Breckenridge and fewer families than Keystone, so lift queues stay shorter even on busy weekends.
Breckenridge is the busiest of the three, partly because the town itself is a destination. Weekends there feel considerably more crowded than midweek.
Can you stay in one and ski the others?
Yes, and many people do. Breckenridge to Keystone takes 25 to 30 minutes, Breckenridge to Copper 25 to 30, and Keystone to Copper around 30.
