Why driving yourself is harder than it looks
Parking at Red Rocks is free, which sounds like a good deal until you understand the conditions attached to it.
- The upper lots fill early. Upper North and Upper South are closest to the entrance and typically fill around 90 minutes before showtime for a popular act.
- Overflow means an uphill walk. Once the upper lots are full you are directed to the lower lots or roadside parking. That walk is uphill and can run close to half a mile.
- Leaving takes longer than arriving. Clearing the lots after a sold-out show commonly takes thirty to forty-five minutes before you reach the highway.
- It gets cold after dark. At 6,450 feet the venue runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler than Denver once the sun drops, even in July.
- Somebody has to stay sober. Beer and wine are permitted in the park, which means one person in the group misses out.
Where a private car actually drops you
