What to Pack for a Colorado Ski Trip
Quick answer
Bring layers, boots if you own good ones, goggles, high-factor sunscreen and lip balm. Rent skis and boards rather than flying with them, since airline baggage fees for ski equipment usually exceed a week of rental. Colorado is dry and sits at altitude, so sun protection and moisturiser matter far more than most visitors expect.
Colorado weather does things that catch people out. Bright sun, thin air and a twenty degree swing between morning and afternoon, sometimes on the same run.
What should you bring versus rent?
Rent skis and snowboards, bring your own boots. Fit matters more for boots than anything else on the mountain, while rental skis in Colorado resort towns are well maintained and regularly replaced.
| Item | Bring or rent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ski or snowboard boots | Bring | Fit is personal and rental boots rarely match |
| Skis or board | Rent | Baggage fees usually exceed a week of rental |
| Helmet | Either | Cheap to rent, but bring yours if it fits well |
| Goggles | Bring | Rental stock is limited and often scratched |
| Jacket and trousers | Bring | Pack down small, rental options are limited |
| Base layers | Bring | Not usually available to rent |
The Colorado-specific items people forget
Four things catch out visitors from lower altitudes almost every trip.
- High-factor sunscreen. UV intensity climbs sharply with altitude and snow reflects it back at you. Sunburn in February is entirely normal here.
- Lip balm with SPF. Same reason, and lips burn faster than anywhere else on your face.
- Moisturiser and lip care. Colorado humidity is very low. Skin and lips crack within days.
- A refillable water bottle. Altitude dehydrates you faster, and staying hydrated genuinely helps with how you feel on day one.
How to layer for Colorado
Three layers, and plan to remove one by lunchtime. A base layer against the skin, an insulating mid layer, and a waterproof shell on top.
Morning temperatures regularly sit well below freezing while afternoons in March can feel like spring. Therefore the ability to strip a layer matters more than any single warm jacket.
Bringing gear? Tell us at booking.
SUVs for up to 6 and vans for up to 14, with dedicated space for skis and boards.
How much room does ski gear actually take?
More than most people plan for. A ski bag runs about six feet long, and a boot bag is bulky rather than heavy, so four people with gear fills an ordinary car boot before the suitcases go in.
That is why we ask about gear at booking. A group of six with skis needs different cargo space from a group of six with carry-ons, and our 14-passenger van exists partly for exactly this reason. More on whether a rental car makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth flying with skis to Colorado?
Usually not. Airline ski equipment fees for a round trip often exceed a week of rental, and rental shops in resort towns carry current stock.
How cold does it get at Colorado resorts?
Mornings frequently sit well below freezing in January and February, while sunny March afternoons can feel mild. Layers handle the swing better than one heavy coat.
Can your vehicles carry ski bags?
Yes. Tell us how many at booking and we send a vehicle with matching cargo space. Nobody rides two hours with a bag on their lap.
